Tom Waits is een folkmuzikant en verhalenverteller doordrenkt van blues, jazz en vaudeville. Zonder groot mainstream succes kreeg Waits nog steeds een wereldwijde cultstatus en speelde hij overal, van duikbars tot opera- en concertzalen. Waits vindt dat een voorstelling "een spektakel en vermakelijk" moet zijn. Met zijn sluwe gevoel voor humor hebben zijn liveshows een vleugje onvoorspelbaarheid. Tom Waits heeft twee Grammy's gewonnen en staat in de Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Zijn kenmerkende stem bracht hem in 2010 op de lijst van Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Singers.
